Young Yuga Aoyama receives a special belt

Yuga receiving his special belt.

Yuga Aoyama hailed from a wealthy family but was born Quirkless, developing an inferiority complex with respect to other people, to the point of asking his parents why he is so different from everyone.[1] Not wanting their son to suffer discrimination and wanting to support his dreams of being a hero, they managed to get in contact with All For One, who agreed to give Yuga a Quirk.

All For One transferred Navel Laser to Yuga. Unfortunately, because Yuga's body was inappropriate for the Quirk, the beams involuntarily leaked out from his navel. To explain his incompatibility with the Quirk, Yuga often justifies himself by saying that it is due to a birth defect. Later, Yuga received a special belt created especially for him to prevent his powers from leaking out, an item he would wear throughout his childhood.[2][3]

Just as he and his family were living peacefully, All For One came to collect on their debt and forced Yuga to abide by his commands. He and his parents were forced to work for the villain out of fear of retaliation for not doing so, and threatened with death if they were to betray him. With no choice but to become All For One's double agent, Yuga has never stopped feeling crushed by his guilt.[3]

At night, the Class A members regroup at a factory where the rest of the island citizens are currently staying at due to the villain attack. Yuga helps distribute food among the refugees along with several other students. Later, they have a meeting where they discover that the objective of the villain leader, Nine, is to steal the Cell Activation Quirk from a boy named Katsuma.

With this information, they devise a plan to approach them in front and keep civilians safe. The plan is to lure the villains to the furthest corner of the island where ancient castle ruins are. The heroes will engage the villains using the terrain to their advantage and spit the villains apart, so each member has to face several students alone.

Supernova

Yuga attacks with his Quirk at maximum power.

The next morning, Nine and his crew arrive at the entrance to the island. Momo Yaoyorozu and Yuga Aoyama are the first line of defense. Seeing the villains approaching, she orders Yuga to start charging the energy of his Navel Laser. When the villains are already in the agreed position, Yuga attacks using his Ultimate Move "Supernova" to fire a massive naval laser bombardment at the villains. Momo joins him attacking them with two cannons he had created.

Nine blocks their attacks with his Air Wall Quirk, but Slice and Chimera are forced to split up. Momo and Yuga are completely exhausted, but the first phase is accomplished. With Nine's allies driven to designated points, now only the leader remains. Class 1-A begins to attack Nine in turns to force him to use his Quirk as much as possible until he reaches the limit of his abilities. With Momo's help, Yuga continues to contribute to the fight, despite he has already reached the limit with his Quirk, until finally Nine defeats him

Momo and Yuga are rescued

Momo and Yuga are rescued.

While he is unconscious, Izuku and Katsuki manage to defeat Nine, saving the island and its inhabitants in the process. After Class 1-A emerged victorious over the threat, the military and a large number of heroes arrive on Nabu Island, rescuing the civilians and medically treating Class 1-A. The villains are arrested, and Class 1-A continues to stay on Nabu Island to help repair the damage done by Nine and his villains until the Public Safety Commission suspends the program and orders them to be sent home. With the island being repaired by the military and the heroes, Class 1-A boards a ferry to return to the U.A. High School.[64]

Endeavor Agency Arc[]

Episode 101

Class 1-A's Christmas party.

Class 1-A participates in a Hero Interview Training taught by Mt. Lady.[65] Days later, the Hero Work Recommendation Project takes place, staying on Nabu Island before returning.[64]

Shortly after they return from Nabu Island, on the night of Christmas Eve, the whole class celebrates Christmas. Then, the class holds a surprise gift exchange. Yuga's gift, which is a photo of himself, ends up in Minoru's hands, much to his dismay.[66]

Due the increase of the villain activity, The Hero Public Safety Commission demand all the students heroes for all academies to undergo practical field training. With Hero Work-Studies back in effect, Yuga, Mina Ashido and Toru Hagakure[67] work under the No. 9 Pro Hero, Yoroi Musha.[68]

My Hero Academia: World Heroes' Mission[]

The remaining students during the Humarise crisis

Yuga watching Humarise's threat to the world.

Yuga, along with Tenya, Koji, and his Agency teammates, Mina and Toru, remain at U.A. while most of his classmates participate in an international mission organized by the World Heroes Association against the cult Humarise. A few days after the mission began, Flect Turn, the leader of Humarise, announces on television that they have placed Trigger Bombs in 25 cities around the world and that they will detonate in less than two hours. Yuga watches this announcement with concern.

Fortunately, the crisis is averted thanks to Izuku and his group, managaing to defuse the bombs worldwide, saving the world from catastrophic destruction. Once they recover from their wounds, the classmates who were deployed during their Work-Study return back to Heights Alliance and celebrate their victory, with Yuga giving Izuku cheese as thanks.[69]

Paranormal Liberation War Arc[]

Navel Saber

Yuga shows off his new Ultimate Move.

Winter break ends and students return from their Work-Studies to show their progress with their Quirks and skills.[70] At Ground Alpha, under the supervision of All Might, the students battle Villain Bots to show off the new skills and Ultimate Moves they have developed. Mina, Yuga, and Toru are the first to show their improvement under the tutelage of Yoroi Musha.

Yuga shows off a brand new Ultimate Move: Navel Saber, using it to destroy several of U.A.'s Villain Bots, much to the delight of his classmates. Toru Hagakure jumps into the battle, congratulating Yuga, and revealing her new ability to grab and warp light, grabbing one of Yuga's laser beams, and bending it into a group of Bots, destroying them.

Izuku feels blessed by his current situation

Yuga enjoys a party with his classmates.

Although Yuga ends up with a sore stomach for having abused his Quirk during the exhibitions, the three students proudly announce their success, much to the delight of All Might and the rest of the class.[71] Later at night, he helps his classmates to organize a Work Study/Brainstorm/Hot pot party to energize everyone for the new term.[72]

The months go by until it's late March. The Hero Public Safety Commission had uncovered the plans of Tomura Shigaraki and his organization, the Paranormal Liberation Front. They organize a large force of heroes to take the villain organization down. While a team of heroes raid the Jaku General Hospital, where the Nomu are created, another team does the same at Gunga Mountain Villa, the Front's main headquarters.

Villa Backup Team (Anime)

The Villa Backup Team wait for the signal to attack.

Yuga joins the Villa Backup Team along with some of his classmates and Class 1-B students. Their mission is to provide support to the heroes who raid the Gunga Mountain Villa and prevent villains from escaping.[73][74]

After Tomura woke up and commanded Gigantomachia to reunite with him, bringing the PLF Lieutenants with him, the Heroes try and fail to stop the walking calamity. Kyoka detects the giant and warns her teammates. Likewise, Midnight contacts the students and transmitting them what they have to do to stop the giant. Momo takes the leadership to defeat Gigantomachia and uses her Quirk to create a large number of vials of undiluted sedative,[75] giving one to each student so that at least one can make the giant swallow a vial.

Yuga and Mezo attack the PLF Lieutenants

U.A. Students attack the PLF Lieutenants.

Following Momo's lead, the students set the trap for Gigantomachia by softening the ground. As they planned, Gigantomachia falls into their trap and the students begin their assault. Yuga is part of the group tasked with attacking the PLF Lieutenants so they don't interfere while the others try to make Gigantomachia swallow a vial. With the help of Mezo, Yuga fires multiple navel lasers at the villains. However, the Lieutenants and Gigantomachia manage to repel the assault.[76]

Despite this, the students continue the assault, which now has the support of several heroes who had come to help them. With great difficulty, Eijiro gets Gigantomachia to swallow a vial with sedative. More heroes led by Majestic arrive to take charge of Gigantomachia now that he has ingested the sedative, because the more he moves the faster it will spread.[77] Gigantomachia, however, takes on an armored appearance and easily defeats the heroes, and continues on his way to Tomura.

U.A

U.A. students watch in horror at Gigantomachia's rampage.

Before being killed, Majestic uses his Quirk to bring the U.A. students to safety, who can only watch helplessly as the giant devastates everything in his path.[78] In the aftermath of the Paranormal Liberation War, Yuga and the rest of Class 1-A receive a letter from Izuku explaining his history of being Quirkless and "One For All", and how he left U.A. due to being targeted by the villains.[79] This revelation, plus All For One's recent escape from Tartarus, particularly shook Yuga.

Dark Hero Arc[]

In the confusion, the rest of Class 1-A deduce that Izuku is now working with Endeavor and his team, and that All Might is probably with them too. A nervous Yuga suggests that if that's true then their worries should be alleviated, though Katsuki notes that them two working together now would be the worst possible scenario. Being impatient and wanting to know the truth, Class 1-A pushed forward using Endeavor's U.A. Alumni status to confront him for answers.

Once Principal Nezu gives permission to allow the class to bring Izuku back home to safety, the class trails Izuku's whereabouts until they finally arrive on the scene to defeat the villain Dictator and help Izuku. When he refused to give up the fight, Class 1-A pursues him.[80]

Yuga helps Eijiro and Toru secure Dictator on standby until Endeavor arrives to arrest him. They then go to check on any anti-hero civilians still in the area.[81] After Izuku is finally caught and after listening to Katsuki's apology, he and the rest Class 1-A return to a heavily fortified U.A High and deal with the protesting civilians.[82] The civilians are aware that Tomura is after Izuku and don't want to be in danger, but after Ochaco gives a pleading speech toward the crowd, they agree to let him rest.[83] Izuku is promptly washed up by the 1-A boys, before himself finally passing out being watched over by the rest of his class. However, during all this time, Yuga keeps his distance from his class, particularly Izuku, fearing what's to come.[84]

U.A. Traitor Arc[]

Yuga's guilt for being the traitor

Yuga cannot bear the guilt of having to betray his classmates.

Two days later, Class 1-A learn that during this time, Tomura had fought American No. 1 Hero, Star and Stripe, and while she was killed during the battle with Tomura successfully stealing her Quirk, New Order, thanks to her actions, the Quirk acted like a virus within his body, destroying several of his Quirks and delaying his procedure by about a week. All Might informs all this to the class, telling them that this is now their perfect time to prepare for the inevitable all-out war. The class reveals over the past month they had been training with the Wild, Wild Pussycats in order to keep up with Izuku in the incoming conflict, and are now about to head out to continue their training. At the same time, All For One prepares to call upon his "mole", Yuga, for his next plan.[85]

Yuga and his parents are once again contacted by All For One himself. The family meets in U.A.'s forest area, where there is no surveillance. Yuga's parents tell him that they have a received an order from All For One while begging him to continue being the best spy he can be, for fear that All For One will kill them otherwise. He confides that he only wanted their safety and voices his false hope with the initial capture of the villain. The family meeting is overheard by Toru and Izuku who confront them with this news. Breaking down from guilt, Yuga confesses to them that he is the traitor, specifically the one who leaked the information about the U.S.J., and the location of the summer training camp, and was now commanded to lure Izuku somewhere alone where he could be ambushed.[3]

Izuku restrains the Aoyama family

Izuku captures the Aoyamas.

In fear of their lives, Yuga's parents attempt to escape with their son, but Izuku and Toru chase after them. Yuga thinks about all the pain the decision has caused him and his family and that all he ever wanted was to protect them. Yuga tells Izuku that he fell into utter despair after learning he was also Quirkless, and in desperation, prepares to fire at him with a Navel Laser attack, but Toru jumps in front and uses her Warp Refraction to shoot the laser away. Toru confronts Yuga, telling him everyone could have died and all of Japan has been messed up, as her face starts to briefly appear, tears flowing down her eyes, asking what was going through his head, even while living with all them. The Aoyamas try to rebut, but Izuku uses Blackwhip to restrain all three of them, as he tearfully tells Yuga for them to put an end to this now.

Once the U.A. staff and the police were notified of the news, they had the entire Aoyama family restrained including Yuga. There, he is facing the devastated Class 1-A who had just found out that he was the traitor in all the times they've been through. Mashirao asks what he was planning to do if Toru didn't expose him, Eijiro begs him to say it's a lie, while Katsuki simply states that it's a "small world" that he's another one of them that started out as Quirkless.

Naomasa asks the parents all they know about All For One, but the father says they know nothing, because they were only carrying out his orders, and if they failed or lied, they would be killed, having been shown the bloody remains of someone who tried to go to the police in the past. The father continues to beg that it was only them who are at fault and Yuga had no idea. Yuga begins to break down, thinking about everyone that could've died because of him, yet he still had the nerve to smile with everyone like they were friends. Especially after seeing Izuku, another former Quirkless person, fighting so hard againt All For One, made him realize how pathetic he was, wallowing in his own despair, and that he's just a villain through and through.

Izuku retorts, recalling him saving Katsuki and Fumikage during the Training Camp, as well as asking about the cheese message, realizing that it was a cry for help, and that's why he's crying now. He continues that he knows of another Hero who was manipulated by All For One, but her soul wasn't crushed, only her spirit. He states that doing wrong doesn't make you a villain for the rest of your life, as he extends his hand to Yuga, telling him that he can still be a hero.[4]

Yuga is the ace up in the sleeve

Yuga is the key to defeat All For One.

Despite Izuku's plea, Naomasa reminds Izuku that he still conspired with All For One, and they still aren't sure if he's booby-trapped like Lady Nagant was, so they can't allow him to talk again until he's examined at Central Hospital, having Sansa bind his mouth up. Naomasa continues to interrogate the Aoyama parents, with them revealing they didn't report to All For One about the Kamino Incident since they could only communicate with him when he contacted them, but Izuku cuts him off, reminding them that they have no way of locating All For One. Denki jumps in realizing his point about "steering the villains" to enter the fight with Momo adding that Yuga may be the only one able to deceive All For One, all the while Yuga thinks about why everyone is willing to trust a "despicable villain" like him.

Although Class 1-A is supportive of Yuga's innocence, Naomasa reminds the class that the Aoyamas already told them All For One won't believe any lies so they need to keep a level head, when Class 1-A is called on by Shota Aizawa, watching from a tablet held by Present Mic. He addresses Naomasa that he is taking full responsibility for also not recognizing and siding with the rest of the class, informing Yuga he has no intention of expelling him from U.A.

Shota reveals that he has an idea, and after the Aoyama Family's ears have been covered, he informs Class 1-A, the U.A. Staff, and the Police Force of his plan. After the discussion, Nezu states that it seems possible, while Naomasa has the Aoyama Family escorted back to their HQ, telling everyone not to say a word to anyone else about the plan. Before he leaves, Izuku shouts out to Yuga, with the rest of the class looking on sullenly.[86]

He and the rest of his parents are imprisoned inside of Central Hospital and Shota speaks with Yuga in an interrogation room. The doctor accompanying him notifies that they found no irregularities with his brain waves or bodily functions. Shota figures that Lady Nagant's fate was the result of something All For One obtained after his defeat by All Might. He also realizes that if he really planted an explosive in Yuga, there would be no need for the public display of threats to his family in case of betrayal. All that All For One planted was a seed of fear in them.

Shota asks if he's afraid of All For One. Yuga responds yes, as well as fearing that the more his classmates believe in him, the more he'll lose faith in himself, and that even if he took their hand, if All For One appeared before him, he's worried he'd make the same bad choice all over again. His fear causes him to not want to do anything anymore, and just die somewhere alone. Shota continues that even given leniency, his sins will always be with him, and that when the war is over, he may not have a home at U.A. anymore. However, he declares to Yuga that he will fight, because it's the only thing he can do.

Shota tells Yuga to keep fighting

Shota encourages Yuga to keep on fighting despite being afraid.

Yuga understands that, realizing he must become another pawn for victory. Shota understands they may be no different from All For One, using him for their own interests. But even so, he's not going to let him be tormented by his sins forever, and as long as he's in charge of the Hero course, he'll take care of all his students. He tells him he doesn't teach his students to live a life burdened by guilt, and even if he feels ashamed, he must walk along with those who lend a hand to him. He tells him that they will protect him and as long as he's with them, he'll be okay. Yuga responds with a face of determination. He then asks what someone like him can do all alone, leaving Shota reminding him that he will be with everyone together.[87]

Final War Arc[]

Hitoshi brainwashes the Aoyamas

Yuga lets Hitoshi brainwash him.

Shota eventually uses Yuga and his parents in their plan to deceive All For One: using Hitoshi Shinso's newly improved Brainwashing Quirk, they will be brainwashed into communicating with the villain, luring him out into the open without him being able to detect ill intent in their voices. Soon enough, All For One calls upon his parents, asking them for him to deliver a "40 year Macallan", as well as asking for Yuga's contact information, which they give all under Hitoshi's control. He then calls up Yuga himself where he informs him of the meeting place where he'll "isolate" Izuku, also under Hitoshi's control.[88]

He proceeds to call and wait for Izuku in an abandoned parking lot, telling him that he was "released" thanks to his family's lawyers when he arrives. Izuku tries to get Yuga to return with him, but Yuga proceeds to tell him All For One's true goals. Now that Japan has fallen, the Japanese yen has tanked in value, forcing Japanese companies into bankruptcy, alongside the coordinated villain attacks all over the world. With the world facing a crisis akin to the Great Depression, or even the period of the advent of Quirks, chaos has already begun to ensue, and now that the nations have abandoned Japan to prioritize their own stability, they will be forced to scramble to order for some way to maintain long-term stability. Eventually, when the world crumbles without order and peace, All For One will rise up again as the demon lord of the world.

Yuga attacks All For One

Yuga overcomes his greatest fear and betrays All For One.

Izuku says there's no way that will happen because the world still has them, as Yuga apologizes that it has to end here, nervously wanting to protect his mom and dad. From behind Yuga, All For One finally re-emerges after months of hiding. He thanks Yuga for delivering Izuku as promised, asking how terrifying it was for betraying his friend, and congratulating him on his big speech about his goals, having also promised his family a blessed existence in his new world. Izuku yells that he believed in him, while Yuga tearfully states his pain can't be measured anymore... before turning around and blasting All For One with his Navel Laser.

Heroes arrive through Warp Gate

"Today is where we defeat you once and for all!"

All For One is caught off guard by the attack while Yuga hides in Izuku's Smokescreen. The two state how he fell for their act, and how good their performances were, with Yuga declaring for his mom, dad, and everyone's sake, he'll fight All For One. The villain is disappointed and confused by the deception, but either way doesn't care, since One For All is so close to him. Using Search to determine none of the Heroes are nearby, he uses his Warping Quirk to summon an army of villains, declaring it is too late.

Just then, All For One is once again taken aback when he spots Kurogiri's Warp Gate starting to appear behind them, courtesy of Neito Monoma. As the rest of the Heroes begin emerging from the gates, Yuga declares to All For One the story his parents told him before, about the one thing he fears most: that the world knows Japan isn't finished yet and if they can lead the way, it will inspire the rest of them. With all the Heroes being teleported to his location, Yuga yells that today is the day where he falls right here and now.[89]

As the Final War begins, All Might springs up the "Troy" system trap, trapping many villains in separate cages, allowing the Heroes to push them into several more Warp Gates, separating them all over Japan. Yuga is one of the Heroes to stay behind in the parking lot to deal with the villains that weren't caught in the traps, put in the care of Fat Gum to be watched over. Fat Gum gives Yuga credit for his taunting words from earlier, which he tries to recover from.[90]

Fat Gum is in command to capture the remaining villains

Yuga and Fat Gum deal with the villains in the area.

In the middle of the battle, Yuga and Fat Gum are confronted by the Tartarus escapee and serial killer: Kunieda, who notes that there have been no one who has deceived All For One and lived to tell the tale, and he will be no exception. He declares that as All For One's next assassin, he'll show how to get the job done, and asks Yuga if he's ready to be the next target, which he confidently responds to.[91]

After defeating the other Villains, all but one of the 32 Heroes in the area have been defeated by Kunieda. He uses his plants to consume the entire area, and keeping Yuga and Fat Gum contained. Suspended in the air with plants and fungus growing out of him, Yuga is helpless to fight back as his belt is also destroyed, causing his Quirk to leak out of his body uncontrollably.

Kunieda defeats the Heroes

Yuga is defeated and starts to be consumed by Kunieda and his plants.

Kunieda mocks that there's no need for light or photosynthesis, since his seedlings only require flesh to thrive, just as the roots being to consume Fat Gum, rendering his Fat Absorption Quirk useless. He uses his last strength to tell Yuga to show them what he's made of, before he is transformed into a plant as well. Kunieda states how after just one bloom, the spreading pollen allowed them to propagate like a daisy chain, them all being extensions of himself via their roots.

He holds up Yuga's destroyed belt, telling the "filthy traitor" he has no hope of escape, as without it, his Navel Laser will freely leak out from his body. He says that through his desire to fit in, he became a pawn by accepting a power ill-suited for himself, calling him a "pathetic, shameful life". Nonetheless, Yuga speaks up confidently, saying that reminding himself of how he lived is what spurred him on to follow in the light his classmates bring, giving him the desire to shine from deep down within his core.

Warp Refraction - Navel Laser

Yuga and Toru defeat Kunieda with their combo attack.

Due to being exposed and dying by the plants growing inside of his body, Yuga undergoes a Quirk Awakening and surpasses his limits by releasing a barrage of Navel Lasers that blast all over the arena, which Kunieda taunts as chasing after that which is beyond his sight will lead to a shameful death.

However, just behind him, a partially visible Toru appears, shouting to Yuga that it took him long enough, and calling him a hero. With all the Navel Lasers bombarding everywhere, she warps the laser and releases Warp Refraction: Navel Laser, blasting Kunieda from behind with a barrage of light, defeating him.[92]

Chapter 400

Yuga is shocked to see Toru's exposed body.

After Yuga is freed from the stems, he looks toward Toru standing above Kunieda's unconscious body, surprisingly able to see her. He tells her she's visible, and when she realizes this herself, she embarrassingly yells at him to look away, whining how being invisible was her whole identity. Yuga apologizes, unsure how to react due to being on the verge of death, while his lasers continue to leak out. Toru recalls something like this happened before during their previous fight, figuring that being on the edge of death made Yuga go past his usual capacity, which caused her Quirk to glitch out.

She turns to Yuga, telling him his Navel Laser has evolved, but he simply responds they need to burn away the plants to save the Heroes, since they would continue to grow even after Kunieda was defeated. He tells Toru to adjust the strength of his light to burn the roots that dig into their flesh. She worries about if his stomach can handle all of it, but he presses on since today is his last day as a U.A. student, so he will do whatever it takes.[93] Yuga gives Toru his tattered jacket to cover her nudity as they continue to clean up all of Kuneida's plants and freeing the Heroes.[94]
