Synopsis
Who cares about all that? Just lemme carve 'em up...
Togaru Kamakiri to Yosetsu Awase in "Early Bird!"

Togaru Kamakiri ( (かま) (きり) (とがる) Kamakiri Togaru?),[2] also known as Jack Mantis (ジャックマンティス Jakku Mantisu?),[1] is a student in Class 1-B at U.A. High School, training to become a Pro Hero.

Appearance[]

Togaru is a tall, slender young man with pale yellow-green skin (greyish blue in the manga) and a bright, fluffy green mohawk. His dark green eyes are pointed downwards to the center of his face, and two hooked blades jut out from either of his cheeks. He has no visible nose, and the shape of his head resembles that of praying mantis with mandibles.

His hero costume consists of a large dark green rugged cloak with, with plain black trousers and three-toed boots. He has a mask around his eyes and a zigzag pattern on his shirt.

Personality[]

Togaru is a hotblooded person who appears rather aggressive in terms of behavior, akin to Katsuki Bakugo, albeit not to the same extent as the latter. He is gym buddies with Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu and like his classmate, Togaru sees Katsuki as a rival for his arrogance. He also seems to have a passion for fighting against his enemies, demonstrated by his desire to battle Class 1-A in the Joint Training Battle. He's very excitable once he gets into combat, and is very eager to, in his words, tear the other team to shreds while his teammates are discussing strategy.

But despite his competitive personality and talk about wanting to cut his opponents, Togaru is still rather cordial with his classmates, as seen when he comforts Setsuna Tokage, Yosetsu Awase, and Kojiro Bondo after their crushing defeat in the Joint Training exercise and tells them to consider this loss a lesson to grow from, rather than something to be despondent about.

Abilities[]

Togaru's reflexes are impressive enough for Katsuki to comment on during an altercation they had in which Togaru was able to block a point-blank Explosion from Katsuki.

Quirk[]

Razor Sharp ( (じん) (えい) Jin'ei?)[2]: Togaru's Quirk allows him to produce large blades from any part of his body.[4]

These blades are sharp and strong enough to cut through pipes made of steel and iron, and durable enough to withstand a point-blank explosion.

Trivia[]

  • Togaru's surname contains the kanji for "scythe, sickle" ( kama?) and "cut, to be sharp" ( kiri?), and his first name contains "apex, to taper to a point" ( togaru?).
    • When put together, the kanji used to write his surname can mean "praying mantis," although "鎌切" is an uncommon way of writing it.
  • In Volume 22, Kohei Horikoshi mentions that Togaru's design was influenced by Jean-Henri Fabre's Souvenirs entomologies and collected insects.
  • Togaru likes collecting insects.[1]
  • Togaru's Japanese voice actor, Kiyotaka Furushima, also voices Kido, Mustard, and Hanta Sero.
