The Shimura Family were the birth family of Tomura Shigaraki prior to when he became a villain.

Overview[]

The Shimura Family were a family left in a troubled state by Kotaro's contempt for Heroes, stemming from when his mother, Nana, had left him in foster care due to the dangers of her hero life. Kotaro forbade any mention of heroes within his house and became abusive towards his son, Tenko, whenever he broke this rule. Despite this, the rest of Tenko's family were kind to him. His older sister Hana often encouraged him and held his hand. Nao was a loving mother to Tenko who comforted the boy and tried to tell Kotaro not to be so hard on him, though to no success. Tenko's maternal grandparents, Chizuo and Mako, also did their best to keep Tenko happy. However, none of them intervened with Kotaro's abuse, causing Tenko to grow up in fear of his father. The ongoing abuse paired with the inaction of the rest of his family caused misery, despair, and frustration to well up in Tenko, believing that the home he grew up in masked rejection with kindness.

One evening, Kotaro found out that his children had gone into his office and found a picture of him and his mother. While Tenko was overjoyed upon learning that his paternal grandmother was a hero, Kotaro was furious and physically punished his son in a fit of anger. While Kotaro's wife and in-laws confronted him about this, wanting to put an end to the abuse, this ultimately came too late. That night, Tenko suddenly manifested a destructive Quirk, leading to the deaths of his entire family and the destruction of his home, all by his own hands. Left alone and traumatized, Tenko would later be found by All For One and groomed into becoming the villain, Tomura Shigaraki.

Tomura's history with his family severely affected him throughout his life, with the trauma of having killed his family causing him to block said memories from his mind. While expressing heavy remorse at first for being responsible for their deaths, upon recalling his father's abuse and how none of his family tried to intervene, Tomura would overcome these traumatic memories and use them to further fuel his hatred, motivating his desire to destroy hero society.

It is eventually revealed that All For One was responsible for manipulating Kotaro under the guise of a close friend, and also gave Tenko his Decay when he was a child, orchestrating his birth, upbringing, and the demise of his family, all so that he could nurture Tomura's hatred and turn him into the perfect vessel that would be capable of stealing One For All.

As of Tomura's death in the Final War, there are no remaining members of the Shimura Family.

History[]

The Shimura Family all started with Nana Shimura, a Pro Hero who served during a harsh era when All For One ruled Japan from the shadows, causing Villains to run rampant. She was also the seventh user of One For All, a Quirk meant to combat All For One, being accompanied by her good friend, Gran Torino, and her pupil, Toshinori Yagi, in her quest to defeat the villain. At some point, Nana married an unnamed man and had a son named Kotaro. While she was content with being a mother, at some point, Nana's husband was killed by a villain, causing her to grow fearful for Kotaro's wellbeing. Reluctantly, Nana chose to place Kotaro in a foster care to protect him from All For One, knowing that he would exploit their connection to reach her. Nana went a step further by doctoring her family register to remove all ties with Kotaro. While heartbroken by this decision, Nana left Kotaro a letter explaining why she had to leave him, assuring her son that she would always love him, even in death.

Sometime after this, Nana finally arrived at her fated battle with All For One, but was soon overpowered by the power of his many Quirks. Nana stood her ground, giving her blessing as well as One For All to Toshinori as Gran Torino took the latter and fled from the fight. Before dying, Nana swore to All For One that he would fall to All Might without a doubt.

Kotaro himself was left devastated, believing that his mother had abandoned him. Despite this, he worked hard while growing up and eventually became a successful businessman. He met and married a woman named Nao Magi, using his fortune to build an impressive house and would invite his parents-in-law, Chizuo and Mako, to live with them. Kotaro and Nao went on to start a family, giving birth to a girl named Hana. Kotaro was also acquainted with a man who worked at Koga Constructions, who seemingly became a close friend of his. Unbeknownst to Kotaro, this man was none other than All For One, the villain who had killed his mother, intending to acquire a vessel of hatred capable of stealing One For All while also wanting to exploit the family Nana had left behind.

Kotaro was still deeply affected by his mother leaving him, causing him to dislike Heroes, believing that they hurt their loved ones only to help complete strangers. All For One took advantage of this, encouraging Kotaro to have another child, since Hana was too far along for his plans while saying that children need siblings to support each another. Kotaro and Nao proceeded to have their son, Tenko. While Tenko was a baby, All For One secretly stole the boy's unformed Quirk, intending to groom him into his vessel. All For One's plans went completely undetected by the Shimuras, as he made sure to keep his distance as to not arouse suspicion, only acting as a family friend of Kotaro's.

Years passed as Hana and Tenko grew up. Meanwhile, All For One continued to manipulate their father, encouraging Kotaro's strict ways and grooming his hatred. As a result, Kotaro forbade any talk of heroes in their house and would punish his children whenever they broke this rule. Tenko especially adored heroes and enjoyed playing with his two friends, Mikkun and Tomo, causing him to often be punished by his father as a result.

One day, Tenko saved his two friends Mikkun and Tomo from being ran over by a truck. After this, All For One found the boy and escorted him home, holding his hand and secretly giving him Decay; a modified Quirk that was purely destructive in nature. As punishment for playing hero, Kotaro forced Tenko to sit outside until he apologized, telling his family that it was for his own good, claiming that aspiring to be a hero would only hurt those around him. While Tenko had the love of his sister, mother, and grandparents, he grew up in despair under his father's oppressive rules and treatment, feeling as though his family never truly supported him.

Sometime later, Hana and Tenko snuck into their father's office, with Hana showing Tenko a picture of Kotaro and Nana. Tenko was amazed to learn that his paternal grandmother was a hero and Hana encouraged Tenko's dream to become one as well, saying that they could grow up to be hero siblings. Later on, Tenko happily played with the family's pet dog, Mon. However, Kotaro learned that his children had gone into his office and was furious. Panicking, Hana broke down into tears and framed Tenko as the one responsible to save herself. Finding out that his children saw the picture of him and Nana, Kotaro told his son that the woman in that picture wasn't his grandmother, but a monster who had abandoned her child. Kotaro took his anger out on Tenko by hitting him and left him outside in the dark.

Later that night, Kotaro reads the letter that his mother gave him and was left in grief. He was soon confronted by Nao, Chizuo, and Mako over his outburst, refusing to heed his rules if he would hurt the children. Kotaro expressed remorse, saying that he went too far and that things weren't supposed to be like this, causing Nao to remind him that he had wanted a happy family. Meanwhile, Tenko was left outside, crying to Mon that he couldn't stand the abuse anymore and that he hated his family for letting it happen. However, the Quirk that All For One gave him fully manifested, causing the dog to disintegrate into pieces. Hana soon came outside, wanting to apologize to her brother for framing him, but screams at the sight Mon's remains and tries to run. In a panic, Tenko rushes forward and grabs his sister, causing Hana to disintegrate as well. Seized by the horror and panic, Tenko broke down in front of his horrified mother and grandparents, and the Decay killed them as well.

Alerted by the noise, Kotaro went outside and was horrified to see that his entire family had been killed by his out of control son. Tenko pleaded for his father to help and rushed toward him. Panicking, Kotaro grabbed a garden tool nearby and hit Tenko with it, yelling at his son to stop. This physically abusive act served as the final straw however, causing Tenko to snap and charge at his father, killing him and destroying their home. Despite the trauma of the event, Tenko experienced a twisted form of delight in killing his father and finally ending the abuse.

Following this, Tenko was left all by himself and wandered the streets looking for help, but bystanders did their best to ignore him, believing that a hero would come to his aid. Thinking that no one would help as punishment for killing his family, Tenko was left to fend for himself, with his memories eventually fading from his mind. Soon, All For One found the young Tenko underneath a bridge, knowing that everyone else turned a blind eye to him. All For One offered his hand to Tenko and took him in, giving him a room of his own while saying that he would be his teacher. Dr. Kyudai Garaki then came in and presented Tenko with multiple embalmed hand; the only remains of his family. Remembering how he killed his family, Tenko broke down and vomited, grabbing on to the hands for comfort. The doctor offered to fix Tenko, but All For One refused, saying that he would help Tenko give those feelings of pain a purpose.

One day, Tenko was beaten up by two thugs and while he expressed his desire to kill them, he held back. Back home, All For One encouraged Tenko to act on his desires, saying that laws and morality were only created by those who wanted the world to run a certain way. Tenko finally gives in to his murderous urges, donning his family's hands as he proceeded to find and kill the two thugs who attacked him. All For One was very pleased by this, congratulating Tenko by gifting him the hands of the thugs he killed, plus an extra one to replace one of the hands he destroyed. Tenko then wore the hands all over his body as All For One bestowed him the new name, Tomura Shigaraki.

Tomura's memories of his family seemingly remained lost in the back of his mind, though he would continue wearing their hands as part of his villain costume, confessing that they made him feel sick but brought a calming feeling to his heart.

During the Revival Celebration, Tomura's memories began to come back to him, eventually facing them in the midst of his fight against Re-Destro. Tomura remembered how his father abused him and how none of his family intervened, believing that the house he grew up in masked rejection with kindness. As a result, Tomura overcomes the trauma of killing his family and destroys his father's hand, unlocking his true power and realizing his one goal in life is to destroy. With his newfound power and conviction, Tomura defeats Re-Destro and brings the Meta Liberation Army, and by extension, Gigantomachia under his control, leading to the formation of the Paranormal Liberation Front.

Following the Revival Celebration, all but one of Tomura's hands were either lost or destroyed, with the remaining hand revealed to be one of Nana's. During his surgery to receive the power of All For One, Tomura meets his family within his mind. He assures Hana that he isn't mad at her for framing him and that it doesn't matter anymore. He also encounters his mother, Nao, and assures her that he's fine, even turning back into a child in front of her. However, Tomura is soon beckoned towards All For One to awaken with his new strength. All his family, including Kotaro and Nana, try to stop him from falling back into the villain's clutches. But Tomura destroys them all, telling them not to reject who he is.

During the Paranormal Liberation War, All For One takes over Tomura's body, revealing that his true goal was to turn Tomura into a worthy vessel capable of stealing One For All. Controlling his former protege's body, All For One attempts to steal One For All from Izuku, but Yoichi and Nana appear to stop the villains. Here, Nana meets her grandson face to face, and despite Tomura being bitter towards All For One, the former assures Nana that he still hates her regardless of the circumstances that allowed them to meet. All For One's attempt to steal the Quirk would be thwarted by Yoichi and Nana's willpower, expelling the villains and protecting Izuku.

In the war's aftermath, Izuku remains unconscious at Central Hospital due to his injuries. Here he meets the past users of One For All in the vestige world. After a talk, Nana approaches Izuku with a request; whether or not he can kill Tomura. Nana acknowledges that her mistake of giving up Kotaro led to her grandson becoming a villain, but also senses the devastating evil within Tomura, saying that there will be no stopping him should he reach his full power. Izuku reveals to an emotional Nana however, that deep within Tomura, he sensed a crying child. The young hero states that even if One For All started as a power meant to destroy All For One, he still sees it as a Quirk meant to save, not kill, and will make an attempt to save Tomura first. This revelation brings Nana to tears, but Yoichi and All Might's vestige respect Izuku's resolve.

During the Final War, Izuku and Nana manage to infiltrate Tomura's mind by transferring the Quirks contained within One For All. Nana encounters Kotaro as an adult, realizing the pain she caused her son and his family by choosing to leave him, hugging Kotaro and apologizing to him and Tenko. Inside of Tomura's origin, Izuku encounters Tenko and stops him from destroying his sister. It is here where Tenko admits that he's a villain who strives to destroy, and that he needs to be because the villains need a hero of their own, revealing that Tenko never truly lost his desire to become a hero.

However, Tomura's weakened will leads to the vestige of the now-deceased All For One re-emerging. All For One reveals to Tomura that he was responsible for orchestrating his upbringing, stripping him of his Quirk and giving him Decay, and for encouraging his fatherā€™s strict ways, leading to him being abused. All For One gloats that Tomura never made a single action of his own accord and that the tragedies, rejection, ordeals, and validation were all granted by him. This revelation breaks Tomura, allowing All For One to erase his consciousness and take over his body once again.

All For One then takes Tomura's body and tries to defeat the heroes once again, but the damage he caused along with Izuku transferring One For All causes Tomura's body to shatter. With help from the One For All vestiges, including Nana, Izuku and Tomura manage to destroy All For One for good. In his final moments, Tomura and Izuku talk one last time, with Tomura admitting that he might have been a crying child after all, requesting him to let Spinner know that he never gave up on his goal to destroy. Tomura even encourages Izuku and everyone else to do their best going forward before he disappears, passing away in peace and finally ending the conflict between All For One and One For All.
