Synopsis
Where will this experiment lead me? Even though I was the subject, I wasn't told. Nor will I dwell on such questions. I'm just a convenient lab rat. It's easier to see it that way. In order... to create... my... no... our ideal world, everything... must be... destroyed.
Nine in "League of Villains: Undercover"

Nine (ナイン Nain?) was a villain and the main antagonist of My Hero Academia: Heroes: Rising.

Appearance[]

Nine was a tall man with fair skin, thin, rectangular gray eyes, and white pupils. He also had white hair just past his shoulders, worn and swept away from his face. In the past, Nine wore black shoes, pants, and a tattered white jacket.

Nine's most defining feature was the large black mask that covered him from his chest to just above his nose, four extra pieces winding around his face and head; built in a similar style to All For One's own mask. Four darker plates covered each side of his neck, lined with dark purple, and he had what appeared to be something similar to the flat muzzle of a gas mask over his mouth that was decorated with seven gray studs, as well as a giant purple and black cylinder protruding from each of his shoulder blades. Below this, he wore a full-body suit of a similar design, with plates of black covering his entire body, leaving only his fingers exposed, and, over this, a blazer and dress pants of a pale lilac color. He also wore black boots.

Personality[]

Nine was a frigid person, unfazed by most situations. He did not attack anyone directly unless provoked and used his Quirks to ward attacks. If pushed enough, however, he was prone to violent fits of rage and would completely abandon any restraint in those moments, demonstrated by his attempt to choke Mahoro Shimano to death to force Katsuma Shimano into surrendering his Quirk. Despite his overwhelming strength, Nine was humble and greatly valued those who demonstrated impressive capabilities by his standards, be they allies or enemies. At the same time, though, he was willing to eliminate those who posed a greater risk of standing in his way, as seen when he believed that Izuku Midoriya possessed multiple Quirks and that he had to be killed.

Due to his powerful Quirk having granted him control over the skies and the weather, as well as his past of witnessing that the weak ruled above others while the powerful (such as his allies) were shunned and ostracized from society, Nine believed that a genuinely superhuman society should be one where hierarchy is determined by one's strength alone, making heroes and villains irrelevant, and power the only thing that matters. With the ideology that might makes right, Nine was prepared to undergo whatever experimentation was necessary to increase his power and make his desired future a reality.

Nine's philosophy and motivations were not just for his own sake but also for his teammates Slice, Mummy, and Chimera. He sympathized with their lives of oppression due to his similar past and wanted to enact their collective desire to build an ideal world for all four of them, as shown when he talked to Kyudai Garaki about his goal as he thought of his friends while referring to "their" ideal world.

Abilities[]

Nine defeats Izuku and Katsuki

Nine's Quirk overpowers Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo, two powerful combatants.

Overall Abilities: With his unique set of Quirks, Nine was a highly formidable villain, only hindered by his deteriorating health caused by his original Quirk, Weather Manipulation, putting his body through cellular degeneration. In hopes of being cured, Nine donated his body to the League of Villains and underwent surgery that involved obtaining a weaker version of All For One, which limited him to stealing only eight other Quirks. Despite his finite Quirk capacity, Nine selected particularly destructive and advantageous abilities. He managed to steal only five Quirks, four of which he used in combat alongside his original power; due to his multitude of Quirks, which he could use in tandem, Nine was an unpredictable combatant, making him all the more dangerous.

Upon reaching Nabu Island, Nine easily repelled the numerous onslaughts from U.A. High's Class 1-A, and was exhausted when his health faltered. Eventually, a power-enhanced Nine was defeated through the combined efforts of Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo using their One For All-enhanced abilities at full power. Although Nine survived the ordeal, he was rendered feeble and was killed by Tomura Shigaraki.

Katsuki tries to burst Nine

Nine's reaction time allows him to flawlessly anticipate and block Katsuki's surprise attack.

  • Enhanced Reflexes: Nine repeatedly demonstrated excellent reaction time and reflexes. He used his Air Wall to negate attacks he didn't see, easily neutralizing brisk and omnidirectional attacks.
  • Immense Durability: Nine possessed impressive physical durability, shown when he survived many assaults from two One For All users. Even after being overpowered by One For All in the final battle, Nine managed to survive, although he was on the brink of death afterward.

Keen Intellect: Nine was astute and had excellent observational skills. Following his emergence from stasis, Nine realized that despite the success of his operation, the side effects of his Weather Manipulation had worsened and that he required a Cell Activation Quirk that would be able to resuscitate him. After depowering Mr. Shimano, Nine noticed that the Quirk was incompatible with his blood type: B. After seeing that Mr. Shimano had children, he guessed that one of his kids would possess a similar Quirk compatible with his blood type, given that Quirks are hereditary. Thus, the white-haired villain and his group departed to Nabu Island to find and take it. Upon failing to steal One For All from Izuku, Nine deduced that the latter also had multiple Quirks and deemed him too dangerous to keep alive.

  • Leadership Skills: Nine effectively directed his teammates, giving them designated roles that suit their respective abilities. He devised a strategy to cut off Nabu Island from outside communications and prevent its inhabitants from escaping.

Indomitable Will: Nine held onto his ideals throughout his life, even when his original Quirk pained him, and when he was faced with bitter defeat, he was not dissuaded from his goals. His sheer will did not bend or break under the pure offensive force of One For All, and no matter the circumstances, the man continued to fight on, determined to accomplish both his and his allies' dreams of creating an ideal world until the very end of his life.

Quirks[]

Weather Manipulation ( () (しょう) (そう) () Kishō Sōsa?): Nine's original Quirk allowed him to control the weather, able to instantly cause powerful thunderstorms and tornadoes. However, according to Nine, his Quirk was too powerful for him to wield, and it destroyed his body's cellular tissue.

All For One (オール・フォー・ワン Ōru Fō Wan?): Nine's second Quirk was a weaker duplicate of All For One, with which he could use to steal and hold up to eight different Quirks. He obtained it through a surgical transplant by Dr. Kyudai Garaki after he was deemed compatible with All For One's Quirk Factor. It is unknown if he could transfer his stolen Quirks to someone else. However, this Quirk only worsened his already fragile health faster.

  • Air Wall: Nine can use this Quirk to create a transparent barrier made of pressurized air to shield himself in a particular direction. This Quirk can also be used offensively by releasing a powerful air burst that can repel people and attacks. This Quirk is highly durable, as it could withstand One For All at 100%.
  • Scanning: Nine can use this Quirk to identify different Quirks belonging to others and gain a read on their abilities through an infrared-like vision. To an extent, he can also use this Quirk to measure their respective power levels. This gauging ability is demonstrated when Nine used it to measure the increasing physical strength of Izuku Midoriya as he prepared to attack the villain with "Detroit Smash".
  • Bullet Laser: Nine uses this Quirk to fire purple-colored lasers from his fingertips at will. This Quirk can easily pierce through human flesh and many other solid surfaces. It has also been shown that it can explode on the impact of some surfaces.
  • Hydra: Nine could summon large blue dragon-shaped attacks out of his back that he can control. Nine typically uses this Quirk as a long-range weapon and uses it to suspend or restrain people; he generally summons two at a time.
  • Cell Activation ( (さい) (ぼう) (かっ) (せい) Saibō Kassei?): This Quirk allowed Nine to activate the cells in his own body or another person's body, boosting regeneration and repairing any damage. However, this version of the Quirk only worked on individuals with Type A blood. Nine stole this Quirk from the Shimano siblings' father to heal himself, but it was in vain due to the villain's Type B blood being incompatible.

Equipment[]

Life-Support Tubes: Nine had tubes on his back that released a drug-like substance that healed him slightly after overusing his abilities. It also boosted his offensive power dramatically and allowed him to function for an extended period.

Trivia[]

  • Nine's villain name is likely a reference to the term "Cloud Nine", in relation to his ability to effect the weather, and in turn, the clouds.
    • The name was given another meaning after his procedure to receive All For One, which made him capable of possessing nine Quirks.
    • Coincidentally, Nine also fought Izuku Midoriya, the ninth holder of One For All and made an unsuccessful attempt to steal the Quirk from him.
  • Nine, Izuku, and Gigantomachia are tied with having the third-highest amount of Quirks in the series, with that being seven. They are only surpassed by All For One and Tomura with their unknown amount of many Quirks.
  • It is implied that the experiment Nine took to receive All For One was to prepare for Tomura undergoing the same procedure. Unlike Nine however, who received a weaker duplicate of All For One, Tomura would receive the original once held by his master with all of its stolen Quirks.
  • Nine's original Quirk and design may be based off of and referencing the X-Men character Storm, from Marvel Comics.
