When you have to save someone, they're usually in a scary situation. A true hero saves not only their lives, but also their hearts... That's what I believe. So no matter how scary things get, give 'em a smile, as if to say, "I'm a-ok". The people in this world who can smile are always the strongest.
Nana Shimura to Toshinori Yagi in "One For All"

Nana Shimura ( () (むら) () () Shimura Nana?)[1] was the seventh user of the One For All Quirk, the former mentor of All Might, a close friend of Gran Torino,[2] and the grandmother of Tenko Shimura.[3]

Appearance[]

Nana is described as a beautiful woman with a tough demeanor. She was a tall woman with a curvaceous figure, and at the same time, she was well-built, as befitting a One For All user. She was fair-skinned and had a small mole below her bottom lip, centered to the right, and sharp, intelligent eyes with long eyelashes. Her hair was dark and straight, kept shoulder-length, with the exception of a clump of short bangs hanging above her forehead, and was usually styled in a half-up-half-down bun.

Her hero costume consisted of a dark, sleeveless bodysuit with a high collar, yellow elbow-length gloves, and white knee-high boots. Around her waist was a belt with an angular golden buckle, a small cape attached around the back which hung down to her knees, and over her shoulders was a longer cape, buttoned to the shoulders of her bodysuit.[4]

Personality[]

Nana Shimura's smile

Nana's signature smile.

Nana was a kind woman with a strong sense of justice. She believed that a true hero should smile, no matter how grim the situation, since people who needed to be saved needed not only to have their lives protected but also their hearts; she showed great empathy and emotional resilience.[5] Her overall value for bravery and happiness was where All Might would adopt his iconic smile to put other people at ease.

Initially, Nana had a more cold and grounded attitude as a hero, chiding a young Toshinori Yagi for intending to fight a group of villains with just a lead pipe and refusing to make him her pupil at first due to him lacking a Quirk. This perception of him changed however when she saw his desire to become a pillar of hope for people who were living in fear. Although she regarded Toshinori's desire to be a Symbol of Peace as somewhat crazy due to him being Quirkless, she nonetheless brought him up with her trusted friend, Gran Torino. She subsequently took Toshinori as her student and successor, which is a testament to her openness and optimistic belief in the potential of others, even when they are at a disadvantage such as Toshinori. Much like her pupil, Nana's heroism extended to self-sacrifice as upon her fated battle with All For One, Nana showed no fear in the face of death, instead smiling and passing on her will to her successor.

Furthermore, Nana was a loving mother to her son before she died at the hands of All For One, and was shown to be compassionate, nurturing, and supportive of him. However, from her own son Kotaro's perspective, she was rather sinful. In a flashback of Tenko's childhood, his sister Hana showed him a picture of Nana and Kotaro as a child, with both of them being together and happy. When Kotaro found out about the picture's discovery however, it is revealed that Nana left him in foster care at a young age due to her incapability as a mother and the dangers of her hero life. Even then however, Nana left Kotaro a letter explaining her situation while assuring her son that she would always love him, even in death.

Sorahiko comforts Nana

Nana's grief at having to give up her son.

While this was a well-intentioned act on Nana's part, wanting her son to be safe and happy, it unfortunately had the opposite effect: Kotaro grew up to despise her and heroes entirely, believing that Nana selfishly abandoned him for the sake of helping others. Nana did not forget about Kotaro either, as she fell into tears after forcing herself to cut all ties with him.

Nana would fall further into grief upon learning that her actions resulted in her grandson Tenko being found by All For One and groomed to become the villain, Tomura Shigaraki. Despite acknowledging her horrible mistake and bearing much remorse for it, Nana comes to realize the devastating evil her grandson has become and questioned Izuku Midoriya if he had what it took to put an end to Tomura once and for all, even if it meant killing him. She becomes further emotional to learn that Izuku heard a crying child deep within Tomura and that he would make an effort to save him first, being touched by his resolve that One For All is a power meant to save people and not to kill.

In the core of Tomura's mind, Nana encounters Kotaro as an adult within her grandson's memories. While horrified to see Kotaro hit his son and call her a monster who abandoned her child, she bears no anger towards him but instead blames herself, realizing just how much pain her decision to leave Kotaro had caused him and his family. Nana rushes forward and hugs Kotaro, apologizing for never coming home to him, and to her grandson for all the pain she caused.[6] It's later shown that Nana saved Tomura's vestige from being destroyed and the two defeat All For One together alongside the other One For All users, ultimately showing that despite everything, Nana still loved her grandson.

Abilities[]

Overall Abilities: Nana was regarded as a great hero by powerful individuals, such as All Might and Gran Torino. She is also very proficient with her original Quirk, Float, as she was able to fly alongside Gran Torino, who was considered to be the fastest Hero of his time with his Quirk, Jet. After receiving One For All, in combination with her Float, her abilities were increased tremendously, enabling her to dispatch a large group of villains in a short span of time, and saving the young Toshinori.[7] Despite possessing One For All, she was not strong enough to defeat All For One.

Trained Muscles: Like All Might and Izuku, Nana possessed toned muscles given that usage of One For All requires the user to have a strong body capable of handling the Quirk's raw power, and could cause the user's body to be blown apart if they don't possess the necessary strength. She was strong enough to take down a big villain twice her size alongside multiple other villains with ease.

Quirks[]

Float ( () (ゆう) Fuyū?): Nana's Quirk granted her the ability to suspend herself in mid-air. It is currently unknown if she was able to maneuver herself while levitating.[8]

One For All (ワン・フォー・オール Wan Fō Ōru?): Transferred to her from En, Nana's second Quirk allowed her to stockpile an enormous amount of raw power, allowing her to significantly enhance all of her physical abilities to a superhuman level. This resulted in unbelievable levels of strength, speed, agility, and durability.

Trivia[]

  • Her names contain the kanji for purpose, will, determination, aspiration, ambition ( shi?), village ( mura?), vegetable ( na?), and what ( na?).
    • Additionally, "nana" (七) is the Japanese word for "seven", a reference to her being the seventh One For All user.
    • "Nana" is also a common nickname or term of endearment for a grandmother in several languages, referencing her being Tomura Shigaraki's literal grandmother as well as being a One For All user two "generations" before Izuku Midoriya.
  • Nana is the only woman to have wielded One For All.
    • She is also the only known user to have been married and had any children.
  • She is the second previous One For All user whose Quirk was revealed.
  • The remaining hand that served as Tomura's signature mask following the Revival Celebration is revealed to be one of Nana's.

Quotes[]

  • (Upon first meeting Toshinori) "Really, kid? Was that pipe gonna lead you to victory?"[7]
  • (To Toshinori) "When you have to save someone, they're usually in a scary situation. A true hero saves not only their lives, but also their spirits... That's what I believe. So no matter how scary things get, give 'em a smile, as if to say, "I'm a-Okay". The people in this world who can smile are always the strongest."[5]
  • (To Toshinori) "Take more pride, Toshinori! You're not like the others who're born with what they have. You worked hard to win your power!"[5]
  • (To All For One before her death) "All For One... You will fall to All Might without a doubt. Because... Toshinori is even more... unhinged than you are."[9]
  • (About Kotaro, realizing the consequences of leaving him) "Right, of course. He didn't keep the photo because he wanted to. He couldn't part ways with it. All along... All that time, he just couldn't bear to abandon it. And the scars I inflicted on him... got passed down to Shigaraki. If only I could've taken down All For One... and gone home to my son... I'm sorry, Kotaro. Your mom was weak."[6]
