I am... protector... of what?Kurogiri in "A Skosh"
For this character's previous identity, see Oboro Shirakumo.
Kurogiri (
He was inactive and initially imprisoned in Tartarus,[2] before being relocated for intensive research in Central Hospital.[3] During the Final War, he was freed by Spinner, before turning to aid the Heroes.[4]
Appearance[]
As his name implied, Kurogiri's entire body was made out of a dark purple mist, save for his eyes, which were a glowing yellow. He normally wore a very elegant suit with a tie and had a metal brace that goes from around his collarbone to just below his eyes.
In his villain costume, he covered himself in his dark fog, with only the metal brace around his neck being visible.
After being re-awakened from his imprisonment, his body had some alterations with more elements of Oboro becoming visible, such as his shoulder, hand, and pupil. He also wore a long white jacket which he wore since being studied at the hospital. [5]
Personality[]
Kurogiri had a level-headed personality, which often served to ground Tomura's immaturity and temper. He was intensely loyal to both All For One and Tomura, having been created to watch over the latter. As a Nomu, Kurogiri was programmed to only obey commands from a select few and would remain silent towards any attempt to extract compromising information about the League from him.
Kurogiri was very polite and well-spoken, even to his enemies, sometimes introducing himself in a formal manner. However, just like his fellow villains of the League, he possessed a truly sinister nature, having no qualms over putting hero students in situations where they would be tortured or killed. At the start of the series, he was often seen tending to a bar in the League of Villains' first hideout in Kamino.
It remains unknown how much of Oboro's personality Kurogiri has retained. However, in his conversation with Shota Aizawa and Hizashi Yamada, Kurogiri expressed Oboro's caring traits, as seen when he would constantly worry about Tomura and tried to immediately inquire about his status. Kurogiri himself has stated that he was not at all bothered by Tomura's personality and simply cared for his well-being, greatly shocking his former classmates on how he still retained this trait.[6] At the very least, he seemed unaware or dismissive of his previous identity, although a small part of Oboro was able to briefly manifest himself, thanks to Shota's efforts.[7]
After being awakened by Spinner during the Final War, Kurogiri heeded the commands of his master and used his Quirk to relocate Dabi, along with Himiko Toga and her swarm of rampaging Doubles. Soon however, Kurogiri began to glitch and stutter, with his programming as a Nomu and his old personality as Oboro clashing, causing him to question his own purpose.
Strangely, Kurogiri saved Shota and Hizashi from being killed after they were knocked off the observation deck by Himiko's Doubles, transporting them to a glacier out at sea. When he seemingly deactivates, Shota notices that Kurogiri began to cry, hypothesizing that while nothing could bring Oboro back from what he had been turned into, he still died as a U.A. student and still acted to save them rather than using his Warp Gates to tear them apart or drop them to their deaths. Through reaching into what little of Oboro remained in Kurogiri, Shota and Hizashi were able to bring him under their control, allowing Kurogiri to aid the Heroes by transporting them all to Mt. Fuji to help Izuku Midoriya in his final battle against All For One, who was inhabiting Tomura's body.[8] However, overusing his Quirk while in such a state proved to be fatal, resulting in Kurogiri's body giving out.[9]
Even after aiding the Heroes however, Kurogiri still acted to save Tomura upon seeing the latter's body falling apart, apologizing to his friends by saying that he had to protect him. Using the last of his strength, Kurogiri created a Warp Gate to block Izuku's attack, but his final effort would be foiled by Katsuki Bakugo. Hizashi lamented that he would always extend a helping hand to protect those he cared about, proving that Kurogiri had retained Oboro's selfless and caring nature to the very end.[10]
Abilities[]
Tactical Intellect: During his battle against the Space Hero: Thirteen, Kurogiri created a portal in front of himself and opened the exit behind Thirteen, turning the suction power of her Black Hole Quirk against her, resulting in her back being torn and scarred. Kurogiri knew it would work because he realized that Thirteen was a rescue hero, and thus deduced that she lacked combat experience and battlefield awareness.
Quirk[]
Tomura traveling through Kurogiri's Warp Gate.
Warp Gate (ワープゲート Wāpu Gēto?): Kurogiri's Quirk granted him the ability to create and manipulate a dark fog from his head and hands. This fog acted as a portal to another location. Whenever he produced a mass of the dark fog, it transported anything it came into contact with to a location of Kurogiri's choosing. His Quirk was coordinate-based, so in order to use it, he needed to know the exact location where he was supposed to open the exit portal.
He could also create multiple exit points where the things that touched his fog would emerge, as shown when he stopped the fight between Tomura, Dabi, and Himiko Toga and each of their hands appeared in a different location.
This Quirk's usefulness and rarity made Kurogiri an extremely vital asset to the League of Villains, as even Tomura, despite being angered with Kurogiri during the raid on U.A. High School, did not dare punish him and had Nomu rescue him because he was their only way to escape.
Warp Gate was an artificial Quirk made with a combination of several Quirks, with Oboro's Cloud used as the base factor.[2] It is unknown how many Quirks besides Cloud were used to make Warp Gate.
