The Gollini Family is a mafia crime family led by Valdo Gollini, and the main antagonists of My Hero Academia: You're Next.

History[]

The Gollini Family is an infamous mafia centered in Europe, being the largest known crime organization on the continent that has been established before All Might's debut. Not much is known about their earlier days, though it seemed that their initial head had more honor and respect on values than power. Sadly for the initial leader, he was gunned down in his office by his own son, Valdo, after feeling slighted by his ideals, who afterwards took control of the family.

After taking over, Valdo and his family became notorious in their region, with the Heroes unable to capture them while they continued acquiring more territory and power. Even other Heroes outside of Europe learned about the Gollini Family and were cautious if they ever appeared in their own countries, as Hawks and All Might were able to recognize them upon seeing their profiles.

Upon All Might's retirement, Valdo's obsession with the hero's strength reached a new level to the point that he decided to become the new All Might, even using his Alchemy Quirk to change his appearance to match All Might's. To that end, he began to extensively study his idol and would eventually become aware of a Quirk known as Overmodification, which can modify and enhance Quirks to an immense degree. This led to the assault of the Scervino Household and the kidnapping of Anna Scervino. They learned that only certain compatible individuals could make use of Overmodification, with anyone else being hit with a negative reaction upon touching Anna. As a result, the family of 20,000 was culled down to only eight main individuals and a handful of subordinates.

Gollini Family's introduction

Valdo declares himself as All Might's successor.

With all the pieces in set, the Gollini Family prepared to head to a destroyed Japan to establish themselves. Upon their arrival, though, Anna managed to convince Ginji Kurau, an escapee Villain from Tartarus and one of the very few compatible with her Quirk, to free her from her capturers in exchange for boosting his Quirk, momentarily freeing her.

Upon Class 1-A's arrival to stop Ginji and the interference of Izuku Midoriya and Giulio Gandini, the Gollini Family arrived and recaptured Anna. Valdo then proceeded to reveal himself as the new "All Might" (later known as Dark Might) and announced to the world that he would be the next Symbol of Peace. After being insulted by Izuku, Valdo used Anna to modify his Alchemy Quirk, to transmute the entire sector into an immense ship known as the Symbol of Paradise, while capturing many of the Heroes and citizens to be used as test subjects (or "specimens") for Overmodification.

Eventually, each member of the Gollini Family was defeated one by one, including Dark Might himself, with Overmodification boosting him many times over, including as a monstrous abomination. It was only upon the finishing blow done by Izuku's One For All Quirk and Giulio's modified Neutralization Quirk permanently nullifying Overmodification that the family was finally defeated. Whether all the members of the Gollini Family perished during the destruction of their fortress or were arrested is unknown.

Strength[]

The Gollini Family are a large and fearsome criminal organization, having expanded their territory across Europe and evaded capture from Heroes. Upon recognizing them from their National Villain List files, Hawks stated that the Heroes were in trouble when they made their appearance in Japan.

They are shown to have wealth and resources to spare, including their own yacht, which was converted into a flying airship, and later a massive flying fortress dubbed "The Symbol of Paradise". Thanks to Dark Might's Alchemy Quirk, he was able to continuously manipulate its layout and environment at will.

According to Deborah, the mafia family number up to 20,000, being a vast criminal outfit with many members. However, only Dark Might and seven of his close followers were compatible with Anna Scervino's Overmodification, which allowed their Quirks to be boosted exponentially. The Gollinis' modified Quirks proved to be troublesome in nature, allowing them to incapacitate or otherwise combat the highly trained Hero students of Class 1-A, though they were susceptible to being outsmarted and overpowered. Lower members were shown relying on weaponry such as firearms outside of their Quirks.

The Gollini Family also relied on artificial monsters, such as the ones created by Simon Gollini's Monster Summon and later ones that were created by Dark Might himself. These creatures largely served as muscle, helping to punish members who failed the organization or keep the young Heroes in training busy in an attempt to prevent their escape. The family were also interested in turning the civilians they held captive (labelled as "specimens") into living weapons through Overmodification, though only very few of them were compatible.

Above all, however, the greatest threat within the Gollini Family was their leader, Dark Might, with the evil imposter of All Might possessing great power through his Alchemy Quirk, allowing him to transmute and manipulate anything within his fortress. He used Alchemy to mimic All Might's immense strength, with his attacks commonly consisting of fists and projectiles comprised of glowing kinetic energy. He also forced Anna to repeatedly boost his already powerful Quirk, making his strength on par with that of All Might's in his prime. When Anna lost control of Overmodification through it being overused, Dark Might was transformed into a gigantic monster with tremendous strength, forcing Izuku, Katsuki Bakugo, and Shoto Todoroki to go all out in order to defeat him.

Appearance[]

The Gollini Family resembles a typical mafia family with many wearing tuxedos, tailcoats, dresses, and other well-tailored suits. Their most distinct and common feature among them is a red rose that can be found on their clothing, which appears upon being boosted by Overmodification. They also wear jewelry and gold on their person.

Trivia[]

  • Despite their name, the Gollini Family is implied to not be an actual family, as crime families are often referred to as "families" in the context of territories they control rather than any connection by blood (although they can be ethnically based).
    • Paulo in particular is known for having been active in local gangs since the young age of seven, with "Paulo" actually being a codename and his real name remaining unknown.
    • Ugo is revealed to have had a prostitute mother and a drug dealer father in his Villain file, though it is unknown when he joined the Gollini Family.
    • Deborah is revealed to be the eldest daughter of an unnamed family from what little information can be gleamed from her Villain file.
  • Valdo's father, the former head of the Gollini Family, shares a resemblance to Don Vito Corleone from The Godfather.
  • While never explicitly stated, the Gollini Family is heavily implied to originate from Italy. This is supported by the fact that they are European, along with their names and Mafia theming being Italian in origin.
    • Furthermore, Dark Might's Ultimate Moves, Bologna Smash and Torino Smash, are named after Italian cities and he is heard saying "Bravissimo!" (an Italian interjection meaning bravo or well done) after watching All Might's fight with All For One.
    • During production of the movie's English dub, Paulo was even considered to speak in an Italian accent, with his actor, Reagan Murdock, recording two sets of his lines with it and an American accent. The American accented version ended up being used in the actual film, though the Italian recordings were still used as reference material for other cast members to play off of.[1]
  • The seven subordinates of the Gollini Family all seem to take after the Seven Deadly Sins:
    • Paulo represents the sin of sloth, being directly called out by Dark Might for his lack of contribution with recapturing Anna, as well as using his Erasure Spot Quirk passively and relying on his minions to eliminate Deku and Giulio.
    • Deborah represents the sin of lust with her appearance as an attractive woman and using her Day Dream Quirk to entrap her victims in their deepest desires, allowing them to live out their fantasies.
    • Simon represents the sin of greed, as he created a giant video game-like dungeon under his control to fill with his monsters, locations that are often associated with wealth and treasure.
    • Bruno represents the sin of pride, being a suave and confident individual who incapacitates others with his Delay Spot Quirk.
    • Ugo represents the sin of envy, being the smallest runt of the family and relying on Gil to teleport him around.
    • Gil represents the sin of wrath, being the largest, bulkiest, and most brutish member of the family.
    • Kamile represents the sin of gluttony, as he is seen enjoying tea and pie while the rest of the family do the fighting against Class 1-A and the other Heroes.
    • Furthermore, Dark Might's Alchemy Quirk, set of seven followers who represent the Seven Deadly Sins, and opposition to a hero with a cybernetic arm and leg, all seem to reference the Fullmetal Alchemist series, whose main villain, Father, shares all those traits; the anime of which is also animated by Studio Bones, the studio behind the My Hero Academia anime and movies.
  • The eight members of the Gollini Family who are compatible with Overmodification all wear roses on their clothing, which bloom to life when their Quirks are enhanced as a result of Overmodification's nature-boosting effects. Red roses are also common in mafia families, as they symbolize love and passion but also foreshadow blood being spilled and violence.
    • In their Villain files, Bruno and Simon are also seen holding red roses with the latter being in an entire garden of them.
    • Strangely, Ginji was also seen with a rose on his belt underneath the mouth on his stomach, despite the jailbreaker only serving a brief alliance with the mafia family.
