History[]

Rei Todoroki was sent to the hospital shortly after the incident that gave Shoto Todoroki his scar. After putting up with her husband, Enji's, endless abuse, Rei began seeing traces of his face in her children and slowly grew repulsed and frightened by them. One day, when Shoto walked in on his mother and the left side of his face reminded her of Enji, Rei finally reached her breaking point and threw a kettle of boiling water at her youngest son, scalding the left side of his face. Following this, an unsympathetic Enji sent Rei to a psychiatric ward in Fujitani Hospital.

Sometime after this incident, Toya Todoroki was said to have died in a forest fire. This news devastated Rei and shattered what was left of her mind. Believing that the sight of him would only cause her more pain, Shoto kept himself from going to see his mother for many years.

Synopsis[]

U.A. Sports Festival Arc[]

Shortly after the U.A. Sports Festival, Shoto was encouraged to visit his mother after coming to terms with the fire side of his Quirk that he swore off using for years in an effort to reject his father. Shoto musters up the courage to go and see her, swearing to move on from the past and free his mother.[2] Upon entering her room, Rei was brought to tears upon finally seeing her son again, apologizing to Shoto for what she did. Shoto assures his mother that he never blamed her for what happened and forgave her a long time ago. Smiling, Rei tells her boy that she wants to see him be happy and save people, allowing Shoto to finally move on as the mother and son both reconcile.[3]

Vs. Hero Killer Arc[]

Following their reunion, Shoto continues visiting Rei on his days off from school. One day, upon learning of the school's Parents' Day, Shoto went to go see her, awkwardly wanting to ask despite knowing she can't come. Upon visiting, they slowly start conversation, with Shoto going over his recent experiences at school. Fuyumi soon shows up, having brought her mother some fresh clothes. Upon finding Shoto's Parents' Day request form, Rei sullenly apologizes to Shoto that she can't attend. Shoto understands this but is still disappointed. Fuyumi decides to cheer them both up by saying that she will go instead, even suggesting bringing a camera to record the event for Rei to see. Shoto is a little embarrassed by this, but is happy upon seeing his mother's improved reaction.[4]

Pro Hero Arc[]

Fuyumi and Natsuo continue to visit their mother at the hospital when they can, with Fuyumi bringing her mother fresh clothes to wear. Due to U.A. High School having implemented a dorm system, it is harder for Shoto to visit his mother, causing the two to stay in touch through writing letters.

Natsuo brings up that Endeavor has recently become the No. 1 Hero. Fuyumi chides her younger brother for bringing up their father, but Rei allows him to continue. Natsuo goes on to say that the entire world is unaware of what he put his family through, having abused Rei and Shoto while neglecting the rest of his children, causing Natsuo to say that Enji is nothing but a stranger to him and believes that he only wishes to leave everything behind. However, Rei reveals that Enji has actually been visiting the hospital and leaving her favorite flower. Though the two still haven't seen each other face to face as Rei is still afraid and the doctors warn that this isn't best for her mental health. Still, Rei assures her two children that their father is trying to make amends for the past.[5]

Endeavor Agency Arc[]

During New Year's Eve, Shoto once again visits Rei and the two have lunch together in the hospital's cafeteria. Shoto notices that his mother's health has improved while being glad that the two of them were able to eat together. Shoto also tells her that he finally got his Provisional Hero License, causing Rei to be very happy and proud of her son.[6]

Sometime afterwards, Rei writes another letter to Shoto, saying how cold it has gotten recently and telling him to dress up warm so he won't catch a cold. Rei reveals that she has been getting out more and that the doctors say that she could be discharged soon. Rei says that she is looking forward to reuniting with her children outside of the hospital, swearing to make up for the past and never let it happen again.[7]

Paranormal Liberation War[]

In her hospital room, Rei watches the news of the ongoing Paranormal Liberation War until the TV cuts to a video of the League of Villains member, Dabi, who reveals himself to be Toya Todoroki, her thought-to-be deceased son. The hospital staff rush to Rei's room in an attempt to kill the TV broadcast, but Rei learns everything, with Dabi stating that he has over killed thirty innocent people while explaining his past, and how his neglectful upbringing at the hands of Endeavor caused him to become a Villain, painting the Flame Hero as a selfish man who had children solely for the sake of usurping All Might as the No. 1 Hero, revealing the Todoroki Family's history to the world as to destroy his father's reputation, as well as the people's faith in heroes.[8]

Shortly after this, Rei finally leaves the hospital to reunite with the rest of her family, assuring both Shoto and Enji that their upcoming battle against Dabi isn't theirs to face alone, saying that the family must unite together in order to stop him.
