Epilogue / The Hellish Todoroki Family: Final (エピローグ/地獄の轟くん家・FINAL Epirōgu / Jigoku no Todoroki-kun-chi Fainaru?) is the one hundred and sixty-eighth episode of the My Hero Academia anime and the ninth episode of the eighth season.
Summary[]
Following Izuku's final victory over All For One, its effects are felt throughout the world, as in Washington, the weather forecaster Meryl Hope predicts clear sunny skies across the entire country, before apologizing for missing the mark in their previous forecast. Still, she warns the viewers of the wind still being strong weeks after the war had ended, apparently caused by Izuku's final smash.
Local and international heroes lend their help to rebuild the country.
Merely a week after the Final War's conclusion, tons of aid started pouring in Japan from overseas. Heroes from all over the world came to the country to help in their restoration efforts. In an interview, Big Red Dot comments that they couldn't just stand idly by and do nothing after watching Japanese Heroes fight.
The speed of the reconstruction allows civilians to celebrate returning to their old homes and the semblance of a regular life. Ochaco Uraraka's father, who oversees the construction of new buildings, remarking that thanks to the Quirks, the damage caused by the war will be repaired much faster than expected, whereas without Quirks it would take at least a decade to rebuild everything.
Katsuki is informed that his right arm will hardly ever be the same again.
At Central Hospital, Katsuki is in his room recovering from his injuries, with his parents by his side. They are informed by Dr. Ryu Yoshida that Katsuki's right arm won't be the same as before. Despite the doctors' best efforts during the operation to reconstruct his arm, the damage sustained during the battle was too severe, and he cannot assure that even with intensive physical rehabilitation he will be able to regain full use of the affected arm.
Dr. Yoshida recommends to Katsuki that, if he wants to continue to keep on being a hero, the best thing for him to do would be amputate his right arm and replace it with a prosthesis, as Mirko did. In response, Katsuki refuses the idea of an amputation as his Explosion Quirk is mainly activated from the sweat on his palms. His parents can barely hold back their tears over their son's decision.
Dr. Ryu advises Katsuki not to be impatient in the rehabilitation of his arm.
Remembering that Izuku didn't even have a Quirk, Katsuki decides to carry out the rehab as soon as possible, no matter how harsh it may be, but Dr. Yoshida tells him to keep it light at first because he still has to recover from his heart injury. If it weren't for Edgeshot's patch-up and CPR, he would have died, adding that he found it impressive he could continue fighting under those circumstances. His life had been saved, so he orders Katsuki to rest and recover first.
In a separate hospital room, Izuku wakes up to find himself sharing a room with All Might. The boy says he didn't expect to be in the same room as him, and All Might replies that it was thanks to Naomasa, since there weren't many rooms to go around, and this setup makes it easier to protect them while they recovered from their injuries and surgeries.
Izuku and All Might share a room and reflect on how the war ended.
Izuku asks him about the shape he's in, and All Might replies that the doctors had told him they'd never had to put so many bolts into someone before; All Might then asks him the same question. Izuku replies he's getting back some feelings in his arms, but what really makes him feels sadness was his failure to save Tenko Shimura's life. Despite reaching the young boy's core feelings and shattering his hatred, he was still the leader of the League of Villains until the very end.
All Might comforts Izuku and wants him to ask himself what was the look on Tenko's face in the end. If the crying boy was nowhere to be found, then he did truly save him. Izuku is able to recall the last conversation he had with Tomura in the vestige world, where he told him it's already been destroyed, referring to society not being the same, and Tomura stated that it depends on what he and the other Heroes decide to do next. With a smile on his face, Tomura asked Izuku to make sure he does his best, before vanishing.
Katsuki arrives just in time to hear that Izuku no longer has One For All.
Their conversation shifts to One For All, as All Might says he could sense Izuku transferring it into Tomura's body in order to defeat him, even if it meant losing it forever. Once again, All Might consoles Izuku by telling him that he fulfilled the Quirk's purpose, leading to Izuku confirming that he still possessed its embers.
At that moment, Katsuki barges into the room, with his worried parents following behind him, wondering how he is even walking around. Izuku is glad to see him, and Mitsuki apologizes for his son's intrusion. Katsuki, on the other hand, is in shock, as he arrived just in time to hear that Izuku had sacrificed One For All, which means that he would once again be Quirkless eventually.
Tears begin to fill Katsuki's eyes at the thought of Izuku becoming Quirkless again.
Trying to contain his emotions, Katsuki asks Izuku if it's true that he has lost One For All, and Izuku confirms it's true. Even so, Izuku assures he had made peace with this fact, claiming that his previous lack of a Quirk is the reason he isn't too broken up about it, and that he's glad he had the chance to live his dream at all.
Katsuki, however, is quite disturbed at this development. He remembers everything they went through together, from when he antagonized Izuku over the years until he finally recognized his worth. All of this makes Katsuki began to sob, surprising even Izuku. Without ceasing to shed tears, Katsuki regrets all the harm he has caused to him and confesses that he wants to continue competing with him as rivals for a long time, which leads Izuku to become emotional at his response, pleading with him to stop crying as his display is very unlike him.
All Might considers both Izuku and Katsuki to be the greatest heroes he has ever known.
All Might gives encouraging words to both boys for their growth since the day they met. He tells Izuku he became his greatest hero the moment he ran to Katsuki's aid during the Sludge Villain Incident, but now he's the greatest hero to everyone else. As for Katsuki, he saved his life from All For One, thus allowing him to be able to say these words to them. All Might ends his words of encouragement by calling both Izuku and Katsuki the greatest Heroes, and thank them both for everything they had done. With great effort, All Might manages to raise one of his arms in an attempt of a fist bump, and Izuku and Katsuki do the same, and the three of them smile and laugh again.
Izuku reflects that when he was a child, he thought the world automatically returns to a state of peace once the fighting stopped. However, he knows their story cannot end until they forge a bright and peaceful future, and to achieve this, they have to go further beyond. Sometime later, after recovering sufficiently in the Hospital, Izuku joins back with his class as they return to U.A. High School.
The graduation ceremony for third-year students takes place.
June arrives, and the third-year students finally have a graduation ceremony and received their diplomas from Principal Nezu. The graduation ceremony is officiated by Present Mic, who laments that the third years were unable to celebrate months earlier, meaning the cherry blossoms are all gone, but does his best to ensure they at least have a spectacular send-off. With his choice of music and exuberant announcement style, Present Mic make the graduation ceremony feel like a party.
After receiving their respective diplomas, Tamaki asks Nejire if her injuries still hurt, and she states they do, but she is fine when she is happy. Tamaki says it's thanks to Mirio, since he looked after them once they were down for the count in the Coffin in the Sky.
Mirio gives a graduation speech without making a single joke.
While enjoying the event, Izuku reflects on how the country's restoration is progressing at great speed, and that it is all thanks to Principal Nezu negotiating with other countries to request help and resources, as he was always looking at what would come after the war.
After Mawata Fuwa gives the farewell address as the students' representative, Present Mic calls on the graduates' representative: Mirio. He starts by sincerely thanking all the attendees for their time, much to the surprise of his audience who were expecting one of his trademark gags.
After finishing his speech, Mirio bids farewell in grand style.
Mirio states that they lost many things during the war and gained nothing in return. The Heroes are always fighting to bring a negative situation back to zero, to bring back normally for everyone. The students from all the departments used everything to help in the war, but they still haven't managed to go back to zero just yet. The years they spent at the school will be put toward that purpose, as today is not that goal.
Mirio concludes that a bright future is impossible in a world without humor. Therefore, the true goal is to create a positive world where people can smile. Wishing Nighteye is watching him at that moment, Mirio then uses his Quirk and Bibimi's giant robot to make a grand exit off of the stage, as he says goodbye to the new second and third-year students.
Class 2-A cheers that Eraser Head continues as their homeroom teacher.
Once the event is over, Izuku and his classmates finally become official second-year students. They regroup in their temporary classroom, where Eraser Head informs them that, due to the circumstances, he will be their homeroom teacher for another year, much to the students' delight.
Katsuki comments that's one hurdle cleared, when Hanta asks him if he shouldn't be in the hospital, to which Katsuki replies he was allowed to return to school by the doctors on the condition to take it easy; furthermore, everyone had to be there today. Hanta mumbles he's making too much sense, but Katsuki hears him and get upset by his remark. Eraser Head's warning calms the atmosphere, and he asks someone outside the classroom to come in.
Yuga says goodbye to his classmates, vowing to become a proper hero.
Yuga enters the classroom to say his goodbyes to everyone, as he decided to leave U.A., despite being told by Eraser and Naomasa that he is allowed to stay. While everyone is saddened by his announcement, Yuga states that leaving is the right thing to do since he joined U.A. at All For One's request, so he feels that he has no right to attend the graduation ceremony. He wants to redeem himself for his crimes, and afterwards go on to walk the path of heroism from scratch.
Yuga begins to sob while smiling, as he takes out a piece of cheese and points it at Izuku, remembering how he continued to trust him even after his betrayal was discovered. Wiping away his tears, Yuga promises his friends that one day he will proudly stand side by side with them as a proper hero. To keep everyone else from crying, he shoots his Navel Laser everywhere.
Everyone is excited to see Hitoshi as the newest Class A member.
Yuga then reveals another surprise to the class, that Hitoshi will be joining Class 2-A as its newest member. Hitoshi feels a little reserved about his introduction, but everyone is excited to see him and instantly swarmed him with a barrage of questions. Feeling left out by everyone's excitement over Hitoshi, Yuga shoots his lasers again, asking his former classmates to start planning his farewell party.
Toru tells Yuga to stop, as the light from his lasers causes her Quirk to glitch, making her visible. Everyone is surprised to see how beautiful she is, especially Minoru, who has to be bound by Eraser Head. The teacher then tells others to calm down as there's still some business to cover.
Mawata talks about some anecdotes from when Eraser Head was her teacher.
Mawata arrives in the classroom to update the second years about what they'll doing: second and third years will be going on patrols around the country to keep it safe and help with reconstruction under her leadership. She continues and says history books will talk about the period after All Might's retirement and after the battle of Jaku City, but much of this chaos won't be documented. Shoto mentions that it was during a chaotic period like this, when there was no symbol, that All For One was born.
Mawata then casually addresses Eraser Head as "Era-sen", surprising the students. The third year explains she used to be in his class, and she's impressed he hasn't expelled anyone yet, recalling that her entire class was expelled by Eraser to give them a taste of "death", which made them understand why they wanted to become Heroes. Eraser Head feels embarrassed and asks her to leave, all the while Izuku looks to be deep in thought.
Ochaco talks about Izuku's current haircut.
After school, the class walks talking together about how excited they are about the news first years arriving tomorrow, and how everything seems to be moving a little too fast. Hanta jokingly references Ochaco's big speech, and just as Izuku addresses her, she points out he had to shave his hair because of surgery and she hopes that it grows back. This prompts Rikido to mention Fumikage's new "makeover", in that the feathers on his are more frazzled. Fumikage says his change in hairstyle doesn't really apply, but he still likes it. Ochaco says she is glad for him, but Izuku looks on unnerved.
Izuku asks Shoto if he's going to Yuga's farewell party, and he replies he will as long it isn't today. Once they leave the school grounds, Shoto separates from his classmates. Izuku is concerned about him, but with a smile on his face, Shoto assures him that he will be fine and continues on his way in the opposite direction, mentally preparing himself for his next task.
Shoto assures his friends that he will be fine.
Shoto reunites with the rest of his family to visit Toya at the secure facility he's being held at. Both his siblings Fuyumi and Natsuo, as well as his mother Rei, have burn marks to a greater or lesser degree, as a result of their attempt to stop Toya together, but his father Enji is the one in the worst condition: completely wrapped in bandages, missing his right arm, and sitting in a wheelchair, being wheeled by his wife.
As they walk through the corridors, Fuyumi tells both their parents that they didn't have to come and visit Toya, but Rei replies the same thing about the rest of the kids, followed by Enji that Rei didn't have to come either. Shoto asserts that none of them are present out of a sense of obligation.
The Todorokis visit Toya in his confinement.
The family is let into Toya's cell, seeing that he is being held captive in a high-tech life support system that not only keeps him captive, but also keeps him alive temporarily. One of the guards informs them that, because how mangled his body is, Toya can only be able to speak for a few minutes a day, and he is slowly but surely approaching his death.
Toya wakes up and looks down to see his whole family. All he can do is weakly croak that he doesn't want to be treated like some sort of tourism attraction that they can all just stare at, before being interrupted by a coughing fit.
Toya tells his father that it's too late to fix things.
Enji is the first to speak and lets his son know that he's retiring from being a Hero. This has always been his plan once the war was over, but now he can no longer move on his own due to his injuries. Enji states that the hero Endeavor was burned away by Toya's flames, which were stronger than anyone's.
Toya sarcastically gives his condolences, and tells his father that it's a little too late to butter him up, and calls him a coward for saying this in the end. Enji doesn't deny the truth and says he knows him very well; after all he has been watching him this whole time, and all he wanted for him to do the same, but all he did was ignore him. Enji acknowledges the fact that his son's flames came from his Hellflame.
Enji promises to his eldest son that he will talk to him every day until the end.
Enji then reveals that he keeps watching his accusation video every day, and from now he will come visit him every single day until the very end. He knows that it took him way too long to be a father now but he does want to talk to him and watch him just like he always wanted. They will use the time the rest of the family has gained to talk like father and son, even whether all he wants is to throw all his hate at him.
Toya noticeably becomes agitated by his father's sincere confession, and the guards monitoring his vitals report that his heart beat begins to elevate and he is approaching his limit. Fuyumi says that she also wants to talk to him, and Rei says there's so much left unsaid between them. The weight of their words only causes Toya to collapse, prompting the guards to tell the Todorokis they should stop for today so as not to burden Toya's heart too much, and come back tomorrow.
Shoto is glad to share the same favorite food as Toya.
Shoto requests one final question, and asks Toya what his favorite food is. He doesn't get an immediate answer and everyone begins to leave. Shoto walks away, but then he hears one final shaky word from his older brother: Soba. Shoto turns to Toya surprised, as that is also his favorite food.
Alone in his thoughts, Toya starts crying for the first time in a long time, remembering their fight in Kamino, and internally tells Shoto he is sorry for everything he had done.
Despite everything, Natsuo still decides to cut ties with his father for good.
Once the family leave the facility, Natsuo, who had been silent throughout the entire visit, finally speaks up, revealing to Enji that he's still decided to cut ties with him for good. He is going to marry his girlfriend but they won't have a big ceremony, and has no intention to introducing her to his father. Enji accepts this and apologizes once again. Natsuo then questions Fuyumi what she is going to do, as she quit her job as a teacher. She replies that a mother of one of her students found her a new job and is completely supportive of her.
Natsuo believes they've done their duty and they've been punished. Enji replies that he will spend the rest of his life apologizing and atoning for what he's done. He tells his children they don't have to watch him but he will shield them from the consequences of his mistakes, and that this is reason enough to live. Natsuo responds that his quest sounds like hell, and Enji claims that's because he accepted the "dance in Hell" Toya promised. Natsuo reluctantly admits that this is the first time he could admire his father.
Shoto assures his parents that he now has friends who support him.
Natsuo offers to drive Fuyumi and Shoto back. Before getting into the car, Shoto turns to his parents and asks them not to worry about him, as he now has his classmates to help him along the way, and he still aims to be his own man in the future; this makes Rei smile.
After their children leave, Enji and Rei reunite with Untenmaru and the Flaming Sidekickers, who are waiting for them in high spirits. At that moment, they receive a message on their mobile phone, and upon reading it, Rei assures Enji that even in hell there are people looking out for him, as she shows him the text from Hawks, to which he genuinely smiles.
Hawks calls Mera to inform him of his new job.
In the text, Hawks asks if there is anything he can do to help. Enji texts back thanking him for the help but will let him know if he needs anything. Upon reading the response, Hawks seems pleased with Enji's courage in handling the situation and wonders how things will change. He then phones Yokumiru Mera, introducing himself as the new Hero Public Safety Commission President.

Anime & Manga Differences[]
- In the Skycrawler's cameo, the anime shows him jumping off a platform after looking out in the distance.
- Katsuki's hospital bed is larger in the anime.
- In the anime, when Dr. Ryu is discussing Mirko's prosthetics with Katsuki, the flashback of her in the hospital choosing them over rehab is replaced by a visual of her in costume with the new limbs.
- When All Might discusses One For All's mission being completed, the anime omits the visual of all the other vestiges smiling.
- When Katsuki and Izuku are discussing the latter's Quirk loss, the anime shows Masaru and Mitsuki leaving the hospital room door before they are shown standing outside.
- When Izuku tries to cheer up Katsuki in the hospital, the anime shows him tearing up as well.
- During the monologue of Izuku explaining that the Heroes fight isn't over yet, the anime cuts the shot of a tray holding Spinner's scales.
- The amount of people in attendance at the graduation ceremony is smaller in the anime.
- When Yuga pulls out his cheese while addressing his class, the anime shows him sticking it out in front of the whole class, instead of right in front of Izuku's face.
- In the manga, Minoru just comments on Toru's visible appearance before Eraser Head binds him. In the anime, he happily tries to pounce on her before being wrangled up.
- The loud beeping from Toya's heart rate monitor isn't present in the anime.
- Toya is shown tearing up a lot earlier in the anime. Additionally, they are shown to be pure tears and not tears mixed with blood like in the manga.
