Bye-Bye, Hero (バイバイ ヒーロー Baibai Hīrō?) is the one hundred and twenty-third chapter of Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court's My Hero Academia: Vigilantes.

Summary[]

In the aftermath of the mini bomber's destruction, Present Mic informs all the civilians that All Might has dealt with all the Villains and since the power will be back on later, everyone should head back home, and to call out for a hero if they need help. At the same time, the Pro Heroes, Team Idaten, Narufest, and Hopper's Cafe crews continue their assistance with the evacuation, and Eraser Head helps a child free from the rubble of a nearby building, telling their family to get to safety.

Number 6's crippled body

Number 6 confronts Koichi in his last moments of life.

He's congratulated by Present Mic, surprised since rescues aren't usually his thing and not so "rational", but Eraser Head claims the citizen's safety is the top priority, so it is the "rational" decision. Present Mic heads back out with Mister Blaster, reminding Eraser to look after The Crawler, only to notice him now missing.

Meanwhile, Number 6 stumbles his way between the crowds of civilians, using his Overclock speed to keep himself out-of-sight, all the while All For One reflects on his current burnt up display, stating that without enough Bomber cells, his combustion ended before completion, but still should be capable of achieving his final goal. He reminds Number 6 that his specialty lies with "Operation Anonymous", and with the Heroes believing to have defeated the threat, he is once again the "invisible man" and able to finish The Crawler with no one the wiser.

Number 6 slices Koichi's face

Number 6 slashes Koichi's face.

They manage to locate Koichi on a nearby rooftop, with All For One telling him to do one quick strike to kill him, also telling him to collect his body for him to study. However, Number 6 instead brushes All For One's visage away, transforming into his "Rokuro Nomura" face, and calling out to the vigilante. Koichi reacts with a relieved look, saying that after how beat up they both got they should go to the hospital, but Number 6 says its too late, as he's got absolutely no body left, and that it's only his Quirk holding his form together.

Number 6 states that he's already dead and no one can save him, so Koichi's "nice guy" act is pointless, but Koichi simply responds he doesn't know much about finding meaning in stuff so they should just go anyway. Exasperated, Number 6 says at the end of the day, they aren't the same; all he wants is meaning and proof he existed, leaving a mark on the world before he goes. He quickly goes to attack Koichi, slicing him on the cheek, before backing away laughing at how he's left a mark that'll leave a sick scar. He exclaims that every time he sees the scar, he'll remember the weight of responsibility, the meaning of existence, and the one guy he failed to save no matter how hard he tried.

As Number 6 unleashes one final explosion, his brain slowly being obliterated, he tries to draw on his past memories, only for there to be nothing worth remembering, no past or future. However, he then begins to hear a song: Pop☆Step's song. He's confused why he's remembering that, since his "Rokuro Nomura" persona was seemingly a sham just modelled after Koichi, but even still, he remembered it being really nice, and even started crying when he first heard it.

The illusions of Knuckleduster and Pop☆Step fade away

"Knuckleduster" and "Pop☆Step" return to life.

Elsewhere, the Pop illusion sings for Number 6, with the Knuckleduster illusion asking why she isn't singing for Koichi, which she explains is because it's a song about being stubborn and hanging in there, further stating she'd rather talk normally to Koichi than sing to him. She continues to think about how they had lots of good times together, but she still never told him what really mattered, saying bye to "her hero" as the vigilante illusions fade away.

The real Knuckleduster and Pop are then awoken by Soga Kugisaki and Midnight respectively, with Soga reminding him he can't die on them yet, and Midnight reassuring Pop to rest until Koichi drops by. While the cleanup continues around the city, Eraser Head locates Koichi unconscious on the rooftop.
